What is New Year's and why Celebrate it in Canada?

New Year’s is the celebration of the beginning of a new calendar year. New Year’s Eve is celebrated on December 31, the last night of the Gregorian calendar year. New Year’s Day is on January 1, marking the first day of the new year.

New Year’s celebrations began in Mesopotamia around 2000 BCE. Julius Caesar set January 1 as New Year’s Day in 46 BCE, honoring Janus. After shifts during the Middle Ages, Pope Gregory XIII’s 1582 reform fixed January 1 as the start of the year.

One of the key reasons for celebrating New Year's in Canada is the opportunity it provides for people to reflect on the past year and look forward to the possibilities of the year ahead.

Polar Bear Plunge Day

In cities like Toronto, the "Polar Bear Dip" is a daring event where brave participants dive into icy waters to welcome the New Year. Every year on January 1st, Polar Bear Plunge Day encourages people to take a dip in cold, freezing waters. It’s also a day for participants to kick off the New Year by raising money for local charities. The day is also known as Polar Bear Swim Day.

Whistler

It took Whistler 50 years to land the Olympics. The Canadian Olympic Association visited the area in 1960, looking for sites for the ’68 Games. At the time, there was no road, electricity, piped water, or sewage, so it was a no-go. Whistler Blackcomb tried again in 1976 but didn't win the bid to host until 2010.

Alberta

Each year, for nearly 60 years, Alberta has distributed about 70,000 seedlings to Grade One students across the province. That totals 4.2 million trees!

LOCAL CUISINE

Tourtière

Tourtière (meat pie) originated in Québec and is a treat typically made for Christmas or New Year’s. Many French-Canadian dishes, including this pie, have a distinct flavor profile that combines savory meats with sweet spices like cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. The filling is usually made with ground pork and/or beef, potatoes, onions, and spices, and it’s baked in a flaky pie crust.

A Canadian dish made of french fries topped with cheese curds and gravy. It first appeared in 1950s rural Québec snack bars and was widely popularized across Canada and beyond in the 1990s.

Bannock is a form of bread that served as a staple in the diets of early settlers and fur traders. The word derives from the Gaelic bannach, meaning "morsel," which in turn likely came from the Latin panis, which means "bread." Bannock is usually unleavened, oval-shaped, and flat.

Butter Tarts

A butter tart (a.k.a. tarte au beurre) is a Canadian pastry that features a buttery, egg-based filling. It often has mix-ins, such as nuts and/or raisins.

Maple Glazed Salmon

Salmon was the primary source of protein for some of British Columbia’s coastal First Nations, and the fish figures prominently in the art, music and culture of the B.C. bands. Salmon is a metaphor for life and a mystical figure that has nourished them since the beginning of time.
